If you stay in Sorrento you can see Vesuvius from a lot of place. And if you want to climb on the top? It’s very esay, also if you are not a good walker.
To reach Vesuvius from Sorrento by pubblic transport you have to take a Circumvesuviana train and stop to Pompei. From here you can take a bus. Bus stop 200m from station and outside tourist information.
This is the bus schedule from Pompeii Station from Vesuvius:
7:55 - 8:55 - 9:25 - 10:10 - 10:25 - 11:20 - 12:20 - 13:15 - 14:25 - 15:25
And this is the schedule to come back from Vesuvius to Pompeii Station
9:10 - 10:25 - 11:05 - 11:40 - 12:05 - 12:55 - 13.55 - 14:55 - 16:30 - 17:40
The area around Vesuvius was officially declared a national park since 1995. The summit of Vesuvius is open to visitors and there is a small network of paths around the mountain.
For to reach the crater of Vesuvius: there is access by road to within 200 metres of the summit), but thereafter access is on foot only. There is a spiral walkway around the mountain from the road to the crater.
The bus stop you at 1000 metre mark. From there you have to buy a ticket to hike the crater of Vesuvius at the information office ( about 6 euro).
A volcanological guide will come with you on the top. From the ticket office to the crater the path is 860 metres long with an average slope of 14%. In about 15-20 minutes you’ll reach the crater. The visits are possible all days, except when the weather forecast are bad. For you trip on Vesuvius we suggest you shoes and dresses suitable for an excursions on mountain and for rugged ground.
